Lizzie Borden House, Fall River, Massachusetts!

Lizzie Borden House, Fall River, Massachusetts
Undoubtedly Massachusetts’ most infamous residence, this house was the site of the notorious ax murders of the parents of Lizzie Borden, who herself was the main suspect in the murders. There was so much evidence against her that she was quickly charged with the crime and sent to court, only to be acquitted. No other person was charged with the murders, making this one of the nation’s most well-known unresolved murder cases. Oddly enough, Borden remained in Fall River for the rest of her life, residing in a neighborhood not far from where the murders took place. It is believed that her desire to remain here has held true even in death. Her ghost has often been seen throughout the house and has been heard laughing on the second floor near the stairs. Her father and step-mother have also been seen and heard, along with their former maid who has been heard calling for help.

House Of The Seven Gables, Salem, Massachusetts!

House of the Seven Gables, Salem, Massachusetts
One of the most well-known historic houses in New England, the House of the Seven Gables was immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel of the same name. Built in 1667, the house evolved over the years, featuring additions and later renovations that altered or removed additions, until finally being restored to its original grandeur. The house is now a museum, and staff and visitors often report supernatural occurrences. The electrical and plumbing systems seem to have minds of their own, as lights and faucets turn on and off unaided. Shadows and full apparitions have also been encountered, including a woman believed to be a former owner, and a little boy who plays in the attic.

The Pirate’s House, Savannah Georgia!

The Pirate’s House, Savannah, Georgia

Known as the city’s oldest house, this structure dates back to 1753 when it was first used as a private residence. Sometime later in the century it became a tavern and inn, which it remained for many decades. Today, the building is used as a restaurant, with the former inn space on the second floor used for storage. During its time as a tavern and inn, it was mostly frequented by mariners and others of a rough sort. It was apparently the site of many shanghaiing episodes where privateers would get men drunk or drug them so that they could secret them away through a tunnel and to their ships, pressing their victims into service. Today, many spirits from this time period still frequent the establishment. Apparitions are often seen on the second floor and laughter is heard there as well. The first floor and basement are also very active, with chairs and place settings being rearranged in the dining rooms and people reporting being suddenly overcome by cold and nausea.

North Wales Hospital (Denbigh Asylum), Wales, United Kingdom!

North Wales Hospital (Denbigh Asylum), Wales, United Kingdom!
Built in the 1840s, Denbigh Asylum was the first psychiatric institution in Wales, UK. It became the North Wales Hospital and grew in size over the decades, adding a chapel, farm, bakery and even a brewery. By the 1950s the asylum housed over 1,500 patients and provided employment for hundreds of local people until its phased closure was completed in 2002. The abandoned site is now protected by The Prince’s Regeneration Trust.Denbigh Asylum’s historic main building was notably imposing, beautiful and expensive to maintain. After it was closed in 1995, metal looting, vandalism and fire quickly led to the deterioration of its Grade II listed structure. Although the site was bought and planning permission was sought to convert the Victorian building in to apartments and offices, work by the owners was not undertaken. More recently, Denbighshire council have conducted over £800,000 of emergency repairs and are allegedly planning to compulsorily purchase the hospital. In 2008, the abandoned asylum was featured on a Halloween special episode of ‘Most Haunted Live!’ As well as filming eerie areas such as the mortuary, two individuals were portrayed sitting in separate padded cells and wearing straitjackets designed for the dangerously insane. While treatments such as pre-frontal lobotomy and electro convulsive ‘shock’ therapy have been performed at the hospital, the asylum’s existence appears to have left a positive impression on many of its ex-patients and staff as a respectful historical society has been formed.

The Grill House & Rock Bottom Bar, Allegan Michigan!

The Grill House & Rock Bottom Bar, Allegan Michigan

The Grill House was built in 1836 by Samuel Hubbard, a Massachusetts Supreme Court justice who had interests in real estate. Hubbard’s Boston Company was granted 25,000 acres and eventually developed the town of Allegan. Used as a company headquarters and boarding house for area lumberjacks, it was the first local public lodging and watering hole. Today, Hubbard’s farmhouse holds the Grill House, a restaurant which offers patrons the option of grilling their own steaks. The Rock Bottom Bar seats up to 70 people downstairs. A whiskey drinker haunts the Grill House and Rock Bottom Bar, and the restaurant owns and acknowledges this presence on its website. According to legend, in 1847, a lumberjack was killed in a barroom knife fight. His body was buried on the property in an unmarked grave, and it is believed it is his spirit that haunts the bar. The restaurant staff has named their ghostly presence “Jack,” and claims he moves chairs, dims lights, changes the station on the radio, opens and closes doors, and drinks whiskey. The Rock Bottom’s owner states “On rare occasions a single shot of whiskey, Jack’s drink of choice, will even be found sitting on the Rock Bottom bar, acting as a haunting reminder of our supernatural companion.”

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennslyvania!

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary was America’s first solitary confinement prison, it opened it’s doors in 1829. Prisoners were completely isolated at all times, when they were moved or transported they had their heads covered with hoods so they could not see the guards or other inmates. This solitary punishment is believed to have driven many of the inmates to various states of insanity. The prison was abandoned in 1971 as the all-solitary setup was deemed too expensive. You can actually go on tours of the former prison and TV shows like Ghost Hunters have spent time in Eastern State Penitentiary to investigate the eerie noises, footsteps, and hallucinations that have been reported by visitors.

The Haddo House, Aberdeenshire, Scotland!

The Haddo House, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Deep in the forests of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, this Abandoned Mansion looks like it wouldn’t be out of place in a Horror film, with its amazing nineteenth century architecture left to crumble away over time. Little is known about this Mysterious house, but it is believed to have stood empty for over 70 years, abandoned soon after World War One. Owned by a young couple, the husband went away to fight in the war and never returned. His wife decided to pack up and leave the estate, and the mansion, known as Haddo House has remained empty ever since. This Eerie abandoned mansion shows the extent of the property’s decay, yet some of the original fixtures have survived. The ornate ceiling artwork and grand doorways show the prosperity of the household, with an oval walled garden now covered in boulders and rubble. A gatehouse can be found next to the entrance of the property, with the driveway still visible through the trees. Aside from the damage caused over the years, the shape of the abandoned mansion remains as a mysterious monument to a bygone age, far away from public view, and forgotten by time.
